What we do:

The Thoroughbred Chapter of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels was officially chartered on May 6, 2024. Founded by dedicated Colonels with a shared vision for service, the chapter was created to strengthen the impact of the HOKC Good Works Program and to bring together commissioned Colonels who value fellowship, community engagement, and meaningful contribution.

The Kentucky Colonel is the highest honorary title awarded by the Governor of Kentucky, recognizing individuals for noteworthy accomplishments, service, and contributions to the community, state, or nation.
The title of Kentucky Colonel dates back to the 18th century, originating as a symbol of civilian leadership on the American frontier. In 1775, Daniel Boone was commissioned a colonel by Colonel Richard Henderson of the Transylvania Company to lead the settlement of Boonesborough, not as a military rank but as a pioneer and community leader responsible for establishing the colony. Similarly, Colonel John Bowman was appointed in 1776 by Virginia Governor Patrick Henry to organize governance in Kentucky County's. Early Colonels held significant authority in both civil and militia matters, shaping the foundations of Kentucky’s communities and governance.
Today, the Kentucky Colonel is an honorary civilian title bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky through letters patent. It recognizes individuals aged 18 or older for outstanding service, remarkable deeds, or contributions to civil society. Recipients are considered goodwill ambassadors of Kentucky, promoting the state’s culture, traditions, and values. The title is for life, and those commissioned are encouraged to participate in philanthropic activities through organizations like the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports children, preserves heritage, and aids those in need.
Kentucky Colonels are known for their devotion to faith, family, community, and country, and they often engage in social and charitable events, including Derby Eve galas, trackside participation at Churchill Downs, and other community celebrations. While the title carries the style of "Honorable" and the abbreviation "COL" in formal contexts, it is primarily a mark of respect and recognition rather than a military rank.
The title has been awarded to people from all walks of life, including famous figures and everyday citizens, based on merit and service. Kentucky Colonels exist in all 50 states and over 70 countries, reflecting the global reach of the honor. The tradition blends historical frontier leadership with modern civic recognition, making it both a cultural symbol and a philanthropic network. In summary, a Kentucky Colonel is a lifetime honorary title that celebrates leadership, service, and community contributions rooted in Kentucky's pioneering history and maintained today as a symbol of goodwill and civic engagement.

The first chapters of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels were established in the 1960s. While the organization itself was founded in 1931, the formal chapter structure with the goal of networking and enhancing the organization's mission was developed later. Chapters provide opportunities for Colonels to connect locally, network, and strengthen their bond with the organization.
The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, as an organization, was established in 1931. It was originally created by Governor Ruby Laffoon as a state order of merit. In 1957, it was incorporated as a non-profit organization dedicated to charitable work in Kentucky. The first chapters, providing a more formalized structure for members, were developed in the 1960s.
